For 2015, the
critically-acclaimed Chevrolet Impala
sedan will come in an all-new version: Bi-Fuel. Unveiled yesterday in
Washington D.C. by General Motors CEO Dan Akerson, the car will run on
both gasoline and compressed natural gas (
CNG).
Natural gas is cheap and fairly easy to find in the U.S. The
average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is around $3.36
right now, according to
AAA. The average price for a "gallon" of CNG is around just $2.10, according to
CNGPrices.com.
Despite an abundance of CNG filling stations, however, it's still not
quite as easy to find as regular gasoline. Chevrolet designed the Impala
Bi-Fuel to burn both fuels to ensure the driver is never far from a
place where they can fill up. Chevrolet said the sedan will have a
500-mile driving range.
The Impala joins the
Honda Civic in having the rare distinction of being a CNG sedan produced directly by a manufacturer.
GM did not reveal the price of the Impala Bi-Fuel, which is slated to go
on sale next summer. The current Impala starts at $26,860
