Toyota And Chevrolet Green Cars Fare Well In 5-Year Cost To Own Study



Yesterday Kelley Blue Book (KBB) announced that its 2014 5-Year Cost to Own award winners.
KBB said these awards are based on the company’s U.S. data for new cars for the initial five-year ownership period.
Based on KBB’s analysis of 2014 models, Mazda and Lexus are the brand winners for the second consecutive year. In addition to a low average fair purchase Price and strong residual values across its full model lineup, Mazda is ranked among the lowest in fuel and insurance costs, making it the 2014 5-Year Cost to Own: Best Brand among all automakers.

Despite an average Fair Purchase Price higher than several of its competitors, KBB said Lexus offers the lowest depreciation cost of any eligible luxury brand, thanks to strong residual values across its full model lineup. Lexus also ranks lowest in repairs and is among the lowest in fuel and insurance costs.
The Prius c won the hybrid/alternative energy car category with a 5-year cost to own of $31,584. The Honda Insight was second with $32,852 and the Prius Liftback third with $34,461.
The Chevrolet Spark EV turned up first in the best plug-in vehicle category, with a 5-year cost to own of $26,421, followed by its stable mate, the Volt, in second position at $33,462 and the Honda Accord Plug-in Hybrid third at $36,190.
The best hybrid SUV/crossover category is led by the 2014 Lexus RX 450h with a 5-year cost to own of $53,341. Second is the Audi Q5 Hybrid at $61,000 and third is the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid at $80,601.
